Common Questions
What should I expect in the first session?
When you arrive, I’ll ask you to fill in a short intake form — a simple snapshot of your health history and how you’re feeling right now. Then I’ll do a foot assessment: reading the feet gives me valuable information about what’s happening throughout the body, where your strengths and tensions lie, and where it might be most useful to focus. We’ll also talk briefly about what brings you here. Together, we’ll identify a theme or symptom to work with, and then move into a combination of touch, breathwork, and guided body attention. I recommend wearing comfortable clothing and underwear you’re at ease being seen in. Sessions last one hour.
Is this like massage? Or physical therapy? Is there any talking?
This work falls into the general category of somatic approaches — meaning we work with and through the body. Although I use many forms of touch, a session with me differs from massage in that you are not passively receiving a treatment, but actively participating in learning something about your body and creating the conditions for change. And though I do work with physical symptoms and injuries, this isn’t physical therapy, because I take into account not only the mechanics of your experience, but the mental and emotional aspect as well.
There is usually a brief verbal exchange at the beginning and end of the session, with guidance and feedback throughout. Silence is also possible if that’s what you need. The work can be gentle or intense, still or active — what matters is that by the end of the session, something has shifted in your body, your mood, your perception, or your sense of yourself.
I’m not a licensed mental health professional, and this isn’t a substitute for that kind of support, nor for any medical attention or treatment you may require. Many people find this work complementary to other practices — therapy, yoga, medical treatment — rather than a replacement for any of them.
Do you give sessions online? Are they as effective as in-person sessions?
Yes, I do work online – and with surprisingly good results. The core of this work — full attention, breath, guided body awareness, movement — translates well to the screen. Online, I may also invite you to bring your own hands to areas of sensation, and I can suggest exercises to continue between sessions. There’s also something to be said for doing this work from within your own environment, which can itself become a resource in the session. And working online means you can work with me from anywhere in the world.
How many sessions will I need, and at what frequency?
This varies from person to person, and it’s something we explore together as we go along. It depends on the nature and duration of what you’re bringing, your familiarity with your own body, and practical factors like your schedule and budget. Like learning a language or a musical instrument, the more consistent your practice, the quicker you tend to notice change. Most people prefer a rhythm of two to four sessions per month. You are always free to pause or stop your process at any point.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged in full.
